Captain Isaiah Vail (1731-1810)
Captain Isaiah Vail served in the 2nd Regiment of the Ulster County Militia during the American Revolutionary War. His regiment was part of the larger Ulster County Militia, which was responsible for the defense of Ulster County against British forces. Captain Vail's service in this regiment is documented in various pay rolls and records, which provide insight into his military duties and contributions during the war. He was one of the few men to fight in both revolutionary war battles in this area who survived as the patriots were soundly defeated in both the Battle of Fort Montgomery and the Battle of Minisink. His compatriot, Sargent Daniel Myers (1756-1835) was another to survived both. He is buried nearby but many of his descendants are buried here in Hillside. Isaiah Vail’s descendants include Theophilus Vail (1800-1861) who was the first person buried in Hillside and Ann Vail (1921-2019) who was the City Historian for many years as well as a leading board member of Hillside for most of her long life.
